The Rest Of God. Restoring Your Soul by Restoring Sabbath. Mark Buchanan. W Publishing Group. 2006.
It is always interesting to ‘discover’ new writers. This writer has been around for some time but this is the first book for me. His insights into this ‘ancient’ topic are very interesting. He defines Sabbath rest in very practical terms and explains the purpose of the Sabbath as it applies to today’s culture. Although he makes the connection between Sabbath and worship I was hoping for more explanation and application of how these two impact our lives. Each chapter is concluded with a short section entitled “Sabbath Liturgy”. This is the application of what is being taught. The writing style makes this an easy read. The concepts are well-expressed and presented with good humor.
I had a very special ‘memory moment’ during the reading of this book. One of the last words that apparently were spoken by my mother as she was dying had to do with her anticipation of the rest of Sunday (our Sabbath). The rest was a release from suffering. I was fourteen at the time.
Sabbath is a day but it is also an attitude. A change in how we live begins with a change in how we think. It is described in scripture by the word repentance
